REACH Theme Connects Deeply

Our REACH theme for 2022 – Love Without Limits – exceeded our expectations. It connected deeply with kids, teens, adults, volunteers, and staff. One volunteer said that experiencing the theme at camp has reshaped her view of how she wants to live her life. And she knows it will continue to be a part of everything she does in the future. After a breakout session focused on the five love languages, a REACH mom commented, “I guess I’ve always known my husband needed words of affirmation. But I realized this weekend that I haven’t been giving him what he needs at all.” When the single adults were asked to name someone who has loved them well, several of them named REACH individuals they have known for years, including specific examples of how they have been loved in action. While parents were discussing that love is an action, a decision, and a skill that can be sharpened over time… one parent stood up and said, “I am feeling so convicted! I need to call my wife and encourage her right now!”

The videos are here!

Today marks the beginning of REACH’s 3-day campaign, with the goal of raising $15,000 to welcome 15 or more new kids, teens, and adults who need the safe community and unconditional acceptance of REACH.

Each video is 4-7 minutes. Watch one or two per day, or watch them all in a row, which takes less than 30 minutes.

Lean in, listen to the unique experiences of our families, and recognize the difference you make when you support REACH!

Next week REACH presents…

This Campaign will run next week between Giving Tuesday and World AIDS Day, November 29th through December 1st. The focus of World AIDS Day every year is to end the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Until then, families affected by HIV live with persistent rejection and isolation, and they still need REACH for unconditional acceptance and safe community.

Our goal is $15,000 to kickstart our vision of embracing 30 new HIV-positive kids, teens, and adults in 2023. $15,000 now will secure slots for 15 of them in 2023.

*If you supported REACH at the Circle of Hope Breakfast in May, thank you! If you couldn’t make it, please watch the videos next week and consider making a gift or pledge.

Anytime from Tuesday, November 29 through Thursday, December 1, pour yourself a cup of coffee and listen to the stories of REACH families on your computer, laptop, or mobile device. You will find the videos here on our website!

Share this announcement with your family and friends!
We’ll see you next week.

REACH is here for the joy and the brokenness

In all REACH relationships and events, we strive to embody our core values of unconditional acceptance and trust. This makes REACH a judgment-free zone where people can walk in and feel at home, just as they are. One of our young adult campers has enjoyed the joyful community at REACH for 25 years. This year at camp when we asked him how his year had been, he paused a moment as if deciding whether he wanted to “go there.” Then tears welled up in his eyes and he admitted the last two years had been the most difficult of his life. He shared some reasons why, and his burdens had truly been heavy. Up till this point, REACH had been his “happy place,” where he found energy and friendship, excitement and joy. But we feel privileged that after 25 years, when he needed something different, we could offer support for the real struggles of life. In moments like this we see the fruit of our commitment to walk alongside people for the long haul. When needs arise, we are in ongoing relationship with REACH individuals and able to respond.

REACH Core Values, in campers’ own words

JOY

“I laughed. A lot. More than the whole year combined.” – REACH parent
“I laughed more than the last three months combined.” – REACH parent
“I have laughed more in the last five days than months.” – REACH parent
“During campfire, it’s okay to be silly and yourself without worries.” – REACH teen

SAFE COMMUNITY

“I know I can talk to anyone here, about anything.” – REACH parent
“It’s always sad when it’s time to leave my REACH family until next year, but I know that it is only good-bye for now. Until then, I can carry all the joy and community that I experienced over a weekend throughout the rest of my year.” – REACH teen

TRUST

“I love being able to share joys and struggles of the year and know I am not alone.” – REACH parent
“I feel accepted through one-on-one conversations with treasured friends, peers, mentors, and campers.” – REACH single adult

UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE

“I am new here and you all welcomed me.” – REACH teen
“Everyone sang together and shared their talents without mean comments.” – REACH teen
“Sharing in women’s group feels especially safe.” – REACH parent

The Transformation of “Mary”

One of our REACH teens has been going through a beautiful transformation over the last few years. As a child “Mary” was quiet and somewhat withdrawn, coping with challenging family dynamics including HIV stigma and divorce. As she entered her teen years, Mary began spending time with an outstanding REACH mentor. Soon after, she volunteered to read Scripture for our 2020 online camp worship service. Mary kept her video off for the whole service except when she was reading, but she did a beautiful job. In 2021, when camp returned to in-person, Mary handled all the communication with REACH and registered each member of her large family to attend. She did the same thing for her family members this year at camp. When camp friends and volunteers began coaxing Mary to do an act at talent show, she hesitantly signed up to sing a song.

Traditionally, the talent show is our most clear display of REACH’s core value of unconditional acceptance, as performers receive cheers and applause and standing ovations whether they tell a joke, do a magic trick, or dance for 20 seconds. Despite this welcoming vibe, Mary found herself extremely nervous when it was her turn. She took the cordless mic out the back doors of the auditorium and into the hallway where no one could see her. She could still hear the music from out there, and when it was time, Mary began to sing. By the middle of the song, she emerged through the double doors and into view. By the end of the song, Mary was on stage singing with confidence, a joyful smile on her face. Many campers and volunteers said this was the most meaningful moment of camp, seeing Mary be cheered on, embraced, and encouraged to be brave. To us, it felt like an outward representation of the transformation we sensed has been happening inside her for the last three years. In Mary’s own words: “I was encouraged to sing although I started from the back, and now I feel less fear.”

Grief and Celebration – Together

At Christmastime, we reflect on our 2020 theme of “Enduring Hope.” Holding things in tension has become second nature during COVID; acknowledging the losses as we celebrate the new and beautiful.

Honoring Suzie Slonaker, Founder of REACH Ministries

We are gathering on Zoom on Sunday, November 22 at 5:30 p.m. to honor Suzie, beloved founder of REACH, who passed away on October 24th. If there is something you love about REACH, it probably exists because of Suzie’s fierce and unwavering determination that REACH be a safe community of unconditional acceptance, joy, and trust.

Join Zoom Remembrance

As we remember her together – in both our listening and our speaking – we express our gratitude that she was a part of our lives and that she created REACH. This will be a simple gathering, with opportunities for people to share memories or stories about what made Suzie so special. Suzie loved candles; you might light one at home during this candlelight remembrance.
